Divisions

Freestyle will be held in four divisions: Men's Pro, Men's Amateur, Women's, and Juniors (under 18).

Divisions may be combined if fewer than 3 competitors register for a division.

Freestylers who can do new school tricks like Vulcans, Spocks, or Flakas should register in the Pro division. New school tricks will only be counted in the Pro division.

General Guidelines

Freestyle heats will be run in between races, with 3-5 competitors per heat and a 3 to 7 minute time limit. Heats will be scored based on tricks performed. Each trick performed will be given a score based on technical difficulty and execution, as outline below. Repeatet tricks will earn consecutively lower scores. In the Pro division, only completed tricks count; in the other divisions, good but incomplete attempts will receive a reduced score. There is no limit on the number of tricks that count.

 

In light wind, trick combinations can earn bonus scores up to the number of different tricks in the combination.

Trick Scores

Well executed tricks get a score based on the technical difficulty on a scale of 1 to 10 as outlined in the table below. Scores can be adjusted up or down one point for very good or less good execution. When comparing tricks in different categories (for example because one competitor does light wind tricks, while another competitor in the same heat does high wind tricks), the following multipliers are applied:

  • 2 x: Planing vs. light wind
  • 5 x: Pro vs. planing
  • 10 x: Pro vs. light wind

Scores for repeated tricks are reduced by 1 point for each repetition.
